Chanonry View Holiday Cottage

Self Catering in the Highlands of Scotland - Fortrose on the Black Isle

Location

Sat back from the road within a quiet cul-de-sac in the area of Feddon Hill, many wouldn’t notice Chanonry View.  With off-street parking and an enclosed garden, surrounded mainly by woodland, it’s a secret retreat that’s hard to beat.

Around the Black Isle

A short 5-10 minute walk from Chanonry View, down a paved woodland path, will bring you into the beautiful village of Fortrose where you can stroll along the harbour.  Follow the shore towards the lighthouse at Chanonry Point where our resident dolphins make regular appearances. You’ll probably see a seal or two popping up to say hello!

Take a wander round the village taking in some unique architecture including the cathedral ruins dating back to the 13th century.  Local services in the village include, restaurants, cafes, a butcher, a baker, pubs, gift shops, a post office and a well-stocked grocery store.

A 25 minute walk east (or a 5 minute drive) will bring you to the sandy shores of Rosemarkie where you’ll find parks, tennis courts and Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Club where visitors are welcome to play the wonderfully scenic double links course, located right on the peninsula.  Home to the picturesque Fairy Glen woodland trail, take a wander up to see the waterfalls or soak up some history in the Groam House Museum.  If you’d rather relax, visit one of the local cafes or restaurants and dine in style by the sea.

From Rosemarkie, drive north over the hill, passing the mountain bike trails at Red Rock in Learnie, and you will reach the village of Cromarty on the northern side of the Black Isle.  Steeped in history, this tranquil seaside village is home to geologist Hugh Miller’s Cottage and the Cromarty Courthouse.   Take a walk along the shore front looking across the Cromarty Firth home to the visiting oil platforms or walk a bit further to view the stunning Cromarty Sutors where more dolphins and, occasionally, whales make an appearance.  For the less energetic, simply soak up the atmosphere in the local cafes and restaurants or browse the gift shops and pottery.

To the west of Fortrose is the neighbouring fishing village of Avoch which can be accessed by road or along the old disused railway line through woodland either by foot or by bicycle.  Intermittent views along the way allow you to see across the Firth to Inverness and the famous Culloden Moor.  Once in Avoch, hop on a dolphin cruise or explore some of the walks and cycle routes the area has to offer.
